METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART

1.13.2009

woah! sorry!

it's been a minute since i wrote here, so i'm going to try to bang out a few entries tonight. the past couple weeks have been pretty great, and the year is off to a hopefully excellent start.

i first wanted to take a minute to thank brooks reynolds and everyone who came out to his photo show back in the last days of december.

for those of you who missed this spectacular event, i got up there and sang and played some cover songs with my guitar, for the first time ever.
my setlist of covers included:
PEDRO THE LION: secret of the easy yolk
LUCERO: joining the army
THE HOLD STEADY: constructive summer
CHUCK RAGAN: the boat
JAWBREAKER: do you still hate me?
MISFITS: hybrid moments
THE NEW AMSTERDAMS: every double life
SAVES THE DAY: take our cars now!

someone was kind enough to catch a video of the jawbreaker tune, which you can see on facebook if you so desire.

here's a photo i took of brooks holding his photo of mike kinsella, which i acquired at the show.

brooks is off in a few weeks on an adventurous trip, where he plans to see america, meet some friendly friends, and take tons of photos. if you live in or near Buffalo, Asheville, Nashville, New Orleans, Austin, Colorado, Grand Canyon, San Diego, LA, San Francisco, Portland or Seattle and would like to hang out and show him around, that would be rad. drop him an email and make some plans!

bad scene, everyones fault

so this past weekend we took part in the annual S.C.E.N.E. music festival in st. catherines. this was our second time on the bill, as we got added last minute like 3 or 4 summers ago. SCENE is set up much like the austin texas south by southwest dealy, and focuses on local bands from southern ontario. something like 200 bands played at like 10-12 different stages and venues over the course of one day in a couple small blocks of downtown st. kitts.

something that i remembered taking part in the last time we played was the mixtape exchange that takes place each year, run by the niagara mixtape union. now, as some of you may or may not know, i love the art of the mixtape, and have been known to whip up quite the mix when my stomach starts to hurt a little bit after meeting a cute girl, on a special holiday/birthday/occasion, when a friend needs a pick me up, or just for the heck of it. i got real stoked to participate this year, and even made a point to get a head start and put a ton of time into my entry. unfortunately, as time ran out, and the weekend got closer, and more so after i forgot to save the cover i made, i didn't end up finishing in time to bring a physical copy to the festival to participate with, but i figured, "why should i waste a great mix?", and decided i should post it here.

my intentions with making this mix was deliberate in speaking to the unknown listener. i wanted to make a tape that would reach the ears of some person i have never met before, particularly someone who knows nothing about me, and perhaps even someone who knows nothing about the scene, culture and music that has shaped my life for what seems to be the majority of my existence. with that, i picked a bunch of songs that speak to me about my life, as well as the ideas, attitude, feelings, ethics and relationships that this movement that i call "punk" are built upon, and have been scratched so deeply into my soul.

what i ended up with was this:
BAD SCENE, EVERYONES FAULT.

clicking that link above will take you to a website where you can download a .zip file. when the file downloads, it should extract itself into a folder that contains 2 mp3 files and a txt file. each mp3 is an entire 45 minute side of a cassette, and the txt file is the track listing and lyrics. (if you get an error that it has been downloaded too many times, then please leave a comment and i will reupload it, but not before being surprised that enough people are actually reading this and would want to take a listen)

listen, read along, repeat, live it.

more phone photos

so i've been struggling through this no camera thing, and here are some more photos that i've taken with my blackberry. luckily, iphoto '08 makes them look not terribly awful.

the venue in vienna wasn't really close to downtown, but i did manage to wander a few blocks to find this mall/train station that apparently used to be a gas chamber? yikes...

every day, a bunch of us have been trying to get out, stretch the legs, see the sights, and get some exercise. this rendezvous of friends traveling on foot has been exclusively referred to as the "walk-about" (not to be confused with a "john-locke-about" ...i am so stoked for next weeks lost episode!)

we had a day off in zurich switzerland, and the rain from the day of the show had let up. we started walking around 1, and headed back to the delicious vegetarian restaurant that shane and i had gone to the day before. we ended up walking around for close to 5 hours throughout this beautiful city, and here are a couple photos from that.

more like "swanzerland"

some big monument constructed out of old wheels, mechanisms and junk, not unlike the outside of toronto's legendary bovine sex club.

a shitty pixilated shot of a ferry exploring the gorgeous waterfront.

a lot of nice little creeks and rivers.

next we headed to france, and lyon was pretty uneventful, and while toulouse seemed like it would probably be worse, we ended up wandering off to find a nice little stream that was surrounded by trees, full of old house boats, and followed by a nice little bike/pedestrian trail.

team walk-about!

this pig seems to have lost his hand! (see bellow as well)

after the walk-about, we headed to a "supermarche" so that everyone could indulge in magnum ice cream bars. luckily i found these delicious tropical sorbet-sicles!

finally, here's a shot that shane grabbed of me with my handless, porker friend.

NYC.

tuesday morning arrived, and we found ourselves parked up at the holiday inn in secaucus new jersey, just on the outskirts of new york city. i guess shane ate a bad cheese steak in philly, because he painted the sidewalks outside the bus after the show, and was checked out for our day off in the city. because of shanes illness, we had to cancel the in store acoustic show we had planned that evening in long island.

jon, paul and i headed onto the shuttle from the hotel to penn station, to get started on some radio interviews for the day.

immediately, i saw that NYC doesn't fuck around with their bikes. i think over the course of the day i saw just as many fixed gears as geared bikes, and plenty of bike messengers.

the enemy.

some more NYC architecture.

at about 2pm, we were all done for the day, so i parted ways with jon and paul, and headed down to the lower east side to 154 attorney st (the nyc canadian consulate / home of aileen and katiebrown). aside from seeing aileen when i got there, it turned out that the majority of our crew had bussed in to 154 attorney as well.

cheapie, aileen and i decided to jump the subway to get to red bamboo (my favourite restaurant in the country), post haste.

i ordered one of my classic favourites, the soul chicken parmesan hero, as well as the cajun fried shrip and a pistachio shake!

cheapie digs into a dijon chicken sandwhich.

on the walk back to the subway, we stopped in at urban outfitters, where aileen, in attempt for those rainy days in "the shit" on warped tour, did her best rambo impression.

fixed gears everywhere!

i opted to break away from the pack and head uptown to the shepard fairey art exhibit at the jonathan levine galleries. unfortunately, this was about as far as i could get with my camera. the exhibit was absolutely amazing! the detail and textures in the prints were something that can only be experienced fully in person with the original print. my mind was fully blown.

more bikes!

i kind of got lost on the walk back to 154 from the subway. i found out that this actually happens in new york, and not just in the movies.

another bike!

back to 154, the crew were all hanging back and relaxing (some more than others)

we watched some tv (new entourage, so amazing) and hung around before getting the gang together and walking a few blocks to a bar.

we headed to angels & kings, a new scene bar in the city run by one of the dudes from fall out boy, or something. we ran into a bunch of friends including the kids from armor for sleep and plain white t's, as well as rob from midtown (djing that evening).

here's plain white dave laughing at my moustache.

DJ rob

aileen and i!

palmer and pauly.

154's tribute to nu metal enthusiast, danny delprincipe.

kevin is still drinking!

i passed out to the loving embrace of lux the stuffed puppy.

the next day we had to get up real early to get back up to time square for a photo shoot. i think i was actually up at something like 6am refreshing the UPS tracking screen to see when my bike was going to arrive. we left around 11 to head to the venue, still no bike. after the photoshoot, i headed back to 154 to find the bike had arrived. unfortunately i was too excited while putting it together to take any pictures, but now that it is pretty much together (need to add a few more obey decals) i'm going to get some solid photos today. after putting it together, i needed to find a pump to fill one of the tires, and even though i found a rad shop right around the corner, it was closed wednesdays. the trusty google maps helped me find a shop, and i was off to the races of riding the busy streets of NYC.

i road back over to red bamboo for a second serving with my friend pulin from PETA2 and his friend joe. i got the bamboo tofu club and butter pecan shake, which were all delicious! there is actually a little blog about that on their site.

pulin and i hopped the subway back up to the venue, as my 50 block bike ride "parade" was officially rained on (litterally). after the show (which was great) mary and i hopped back on the subway to 154, where she needed to pick up clothes, and i needed to grab the bike suitcase that i left back because i couldn't carry it on my bike.

to be honest, yesterday we were in hartford ct, which was pretty sketchy, so i didn't really bring out my camera or bike. i did find a decent juice bar close to the venue, and made it there and back alive, which was unexpected.
